Nelson Mandela.

Your walk in this realm may have ended but your legacy will live forever, Madiba.

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." - Nelson Mandela.

Before I Die: Candy Chang.

Candy Chang lost someone she loved very much, and through her grief, over time, found clarity. She wanted a daily reminder about what really mattered - and wanted to know what the people around her cared about too - so she painted the side of an abandoned building  in New Orleans with chalk paint, and stenciled "Before I die, I want to ______" on the side, so her neighbors could share their personal aspirations and reflect upon their lives. It was an experiment with tremendous results. The next day the wall was completely filled.
The statements made me laugh ("swim without holding my nose"), and tear up ("tell my mother I love her" - "be heard")
Candy's project is now an international one, which anyone can access. According to Candy's website: "After receiving many requests, she created a toolkit and the project site beforeidie.cc to help people make a wall with their community. You can also download all files for free to create your own stencils. Thanks to passionate people around the world, over 400 Before I Die walls have now been created in over 25 languages and over 60 countries, including Kazakhstan, Portugal, Japan, Denmark, Iraq, Argentina, and South Africa. They have been a constant source of inspiration and therapy for Candy. Each wall is unique and reflects the people of that community. Each wall is a tribute to living an examined life. The Before I Die book was just released to celebrate these walls and the stories behind them."

Up in the Air.

This timelapse video of the 2013 Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico by Joel Schat is completely captivating. Attending this festival has been on my bucket list for many years, ever since my grandparents brought home rolls of film from the magical morning they spent there and my grandfather replicated them in endearingly goofy watercolors.

I hear there is a similar festival in upstate New York in the fall, perhaps next year I'll cross this off my list!

Adrift.

Adrift from Simon Christen takes my breath away, it's so incredibly beautiful. I am thrilled to be returning home to San Francisco tomorrow, to soak in the cool fog and feel the sand beneath my toes.

Balancing Act: Ernest Zacharevic.

This week will undoubtedly prove to quite the balancing act, and I appreciate this gem Ernest Zacharevic created for Nuart, an annual international festival for street art heavyweights in Norway. Would you do a double-take?

Water: Edward Burtynsky

I visited the opening of Edward Burtynsky's exhibit, Water, in Chelsea last week and it was spectacular!  His photographs were blown up large scale, and each absolutely took my breath away.

WATER - Artist’s Statement
“While trying to accommodate the growing needs of an expanding, and very thirsty civilization, we are reshaping the Earth in colossal ways. In this new and powerful role over the planet, we are also capable of engineering our own demise. We have to learn to think more long-term about the consequences of what we are doing, while we are doing it. My hope is that these pictures will stimulate a process of thinking about something essential to our survival; something we often take for granted—until it’s gone.”
The project takes us over gouged landscapes, fractal patterned delta regions, ominously coloured biomorphic shapes, rigid and rectilinear stepwells, massive circular pivot irrigation plots, aquaculture and social, cultural and ritual gatherings. Water is intermittently introduced as a victim, a partner, a protagonist, a lure, a source, an end, a threat and a pleasure.Water is also often completely absent from the pictures. Burtynsky instead focusses on the visual and physical effects of the lack of water, giving its absence an even more powerful presence.

Deep Dive: William Trubridge.

Jumping feet first into my first day of graduate school! Meanwhile, Avante/Garde Diaries documented the surreal deep dive (400 feet!) of William Trubridge.

Oh, if only I could achieve this serene, meditative state...

Love is Love.

What an incredibly historic day!! Thank you Supreme Court for standing on the side of justice, equality and love. There's still a tremendous amount of work to be done in this country, but let us celebrate what we have accomplished! 13 states down, 37 more to go!!

Painting with Light: Darren Pearson.

A little something playful for this Monday morning, a light painting by Darren Pearson. A native to San Diego, Darren is working on a series dubbed California Soul, an ode to coastal culture.

His ability to define such detail in his work is quite remarkable (Take a peek over at PetaPixel). It must be incredibly entertaining to reveal what you've created in the long exposures.

Painting with Light (Part II): Picasso.

Revisiting an old favorite. I love these light drawings by Picasso, don't you? I'd love to know who was behind the camera, and what exchanges they had with him...

I'm Not There: PoL Úbeda Hervàs.

An ongoing series of portraits by photographer PoL Úbeda Hervàs who lives and works in Barcelona. He reports that the series came from changes in his life that left him unsure of who he is, but he decided to leave the shoes as a reminder that what was left was more than just a shadow.

Catching Fireflies: Yume Cyan.

Long exposure photographs of fireflies in a forested area around Nagoya City, Japan by Yume Cyan.  The bioluminescent flash of each insect results in the dotted light trails!

Things Come Apart.

Love these images from Things Come Apart, a book in which master disassembler Todd McLellan exposes the inner working of 50 objects and 21,959 individual components.

Visit Colossal for more on McLellan's vision and thoughts on the permanence of vintage objects.

Instant Stress Relief.

Bubble wrap. Who can deny the satisfaction with comes from popping those little pockets of air?? No one.

In an attempt to help minimize the stress caused from the tedium of waiting for a late train after a long day, Italian street artist Biancoshock installed sheets of bubble wrap cut into squares labeled with the approximate amount of time it would take to pop them. Brilliant.

Sleep of the Beloved.

"The Sleep of the Beloved," a series of long-exposure snapshots of slumbering couples, taken by photographer Paul Schneggenburger. I have to wonder what my sleep patterns have looked like in the last few months...

Time of Reflection.

Photographer Kazuyoshi Nomachi captured this amazing photo of Salar De Uyuni in Bolivia, the world's largest salt flat. When it becomes saturated with water, the flat takes on a mirror-like quality and reflects the sky.

President's Day.

Fact of the day: Obama was sworn in on Lincoln and Martin Luther King's bibles in 2013.

Will you be celebrating the holiday with an El Presidente?
